    1. On our trip to Spain last month we visited the Alhambra. Our tour group took an evening walk through Granada's narrow, winding, hilly and timeworn streets and as we crested a hill we came to a plaza. We stood in the plaza amongst dancers, guitar players, and people enjoying their evening to the fullest, looked over to the next hill, and beheld the Alhambra in all its nighttime beauty. Many of us could only gasp at the lovely sight. And that is why I chose to read Irving's The Alhambra. His tale [...]

    2. I only read "The Adventure of the German Student" from Tales of a Traveller, so perhaps it's misleading to mark this entire book as "read," but hey, it gives me a sense of accomplishment! The aforementioned story is very short and delightfully Gothic with its explicit interest in madness and necrophilia and more subtle implications of rape and murder.

    4. Washington Irving pulled off quite a feat, living inside the Alhambra for several months back in the 19th century, and his memorable book is a tribute to that deed. He explores the turf very well, which should be read by anyone who ever appreciated his writing beforehand, anyway, or has visited, or plans to see the Alhambra. Everyone should see the Alhambra, and view it from all of its many perspectives. Most of the sights at this site are great photos, too.I'm not sure I ever gave that book up [...]

    5. As mentioned before I only read "The Haunted House" from this book so this opinion has nothing to do with the rest of the table of contents.----The story started off nicely enough but in the end it amounted to nothing. This alone is enough to make it the strangest thing I have read in quite a long while. I hope The Legend of Sleepy Hollow does not go down the same way but I remember hearing somewhere that this one is a well known "story about nothing".

    6. I read this book while in Granada, Spain and during a visit to the Alhambra. Irving's stories and recollections gave my visit a depth that would not have existed w/o reading this book. To walk in places where Irving walked 180 years ago was fascinating. I'm really glad I decided to read this book.

    7. Irving is one of my favorites - and not because of his Sketch Book, but because he is a writer par excellence. These works were engaging and flowed so easily that I forgot I was reading.

    8. If you like Irving, you will love this book. The mixture of tales and anecdotes from his travels offer a slow-paced, enjoyable read.
